Ravel Essential – Parallel Impressions

"Parallel Impressions" is a literary and cinematographic extension of the Alcobaça Music Festival's "Essential Ravel" programme, which this year intensely celebrates the composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), a key figure in musical impressionism.
Between books, films, talks and sound environments, this parallel programme offers other perspectives and readings on classical music and, in particular, on Ravel's legacy.
Throughout the month of July, Armazém das Artes invites you to listen to Ravel discs from its collection and also hosts two book presentations.

Synopsis

In 1928, while Paris was living to the rhythm of the roaring twenties, ballerina Ida Rubinstein commissioned Maurice Ravel to write the music for her next ballet.
Petrified and uninspired, the composer flipped through the pages of his life - the failures of his early career, the fracture of the Great War, the impossible love he felt for his muse Misia Sert... Ravel then plumbed the depths of himself to create his universal work, the Bolero.
