Color Wheel Ensemble
White Letter to Sérgio Carolino
This original project was born out of a deep complicity between Sérgio Carolino and Mário Dinis Marques, both from Alcobaça, versatile musicians and friends almost from birth.
The ensemble takes on different formations, from a simple saxophone and tuba duo, to a trio with the addition of Telmo Marques' piano, to a septet format with the inclusion of a string quartet made up of violinists Ianina Khmelik and Maria Kagan, viola player Luís Norberto (all members of the Porto Casa da Música Symphony Orchestra) and cellist Luís Carvalhoso.
In order for the project to come to life, it was necessary to develop a new, fresh and original repertoire that would maximise the capabilities of all the ensemble's members. Thus, works were commissioned from various composers: Pedro Santos, Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Filipe Melo (with arrangements by Telmo Marques) - from Portugal; Howie Smith, Jerry Grant and Jim Self - from the USA; Jean-Marie Machado - from France; Étienne Crausaz - from Switzerland; and Mike Fitzpatrick - from Australia.
The ensemble made its debut in 2010 at the Cistermúsica - Alcobaça Music Festival, having also performed at the Vila Flor Cultural Centre as part of Guimarães 2012 - European Capital of Culture, at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and at the Grand Auditorium of the Caldas da Rainha Cultural and Congress Centre (CCC), with a programme entirely dedicated to the music of American composer Jerry Grant, renowned for his works for Hollywood films and television series.
At this concert, we had the honour and privilege of being joined by the composer himself, who presented his suite Mountain Dances (2010/2015), accompanied by a multimedia projection created by him, with images by award-winning nature photographer Barbara Michelman.
The ensemble also performed at the Póvoa de Varzim International Music Festival, where it released its first album, published in 2022 and available on the main digital music platforms. It is currently preparing to release the same album on vinyl, which will be presented on 13 July as part of Cistermúsica.
