This programme explores the richness and diversity of musical creation in the 19th and 20th centuries, exploring the intersection between tradition and the avant-garde, structure and expressive freedom. Marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maurice Ravel, the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich and the centenary of the death of Erik Satie, it revisits three composers whose work, distinct in language, shares a creative restlessness and an innovative approach. M. Ravel, master of orchestration, elevated timbre and harmonic construction to extreme refinement; D. Shostakovich, oscillating between lyricism and sarcasm, reflected the tensions of his time; E. Satie, irreverent and avant-garde, broke with conventions and anticipated new aesthetic approaches.
The musical journey begins with Joly Braga Santos, one of the great names of Portuguese musical modernity, and the cinematic expressiveness of Michael Kamen, whose writing transports the listener to a rich and evocative sound universe. This is followed by Maurice Ravel's iconic Bolero, a masterful demonstration of orchestral construction, where obstinate repetition and instrumental progression transform a simple motif into one of the most hypnotic moments of the 20th century. Erik Satie's refined aesthetic can be seen in the ethereal Gymnopédie n.º 1, where apparent simplicity hides a subtle sophistication. Dmitri Shostakovich reveals his expressive ambiguity in the majestic Waltz n.º 2, which oscillates between solemnity and nostalgia, and in the irreverent Satirical Dance from “The Bolt”, full of biting sarcasm.
In the second part, rhythmic intensity takes centre stage: the iconic themes from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story combine lyricism and jazz energy, while Sonny Kompanek's Killer Tango closes the concert with pulsating virtuosity and visceral expressiveness.
By bringing these works together, this concert celebrates the timelessness of musical creation, reaffirming its power to transcend eras, geographies and stylistic boundaries.
