English choral music flourished between the late 16th and 17th centuries, evolving through the works of composers like Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Thomas Morley, John Dowland, Orlando Gibbons, John Blow and Henry Purcell and many others. This period saw the transition from the intricate polyphony of the Renaissance to the more expressive and harmonically rich style of the early Baroque and would later be thought of as the Golden Age of English music. In this programme we trace a line from teacher to student which takes us directly from William Byrd to Henry Purcell, two of the greatest composers to have ever lived.
