Quodlibet Quintet
Bach
The Quodlibet Quintet’s album BACH bridges the timeless world of Johann Sebastian Bach with the ever-evolving language of contemporary jazz. Conceived and composed by the Portuguese pianist Daniel Bernardes, it reinvents the legacy of the greatest figure in Baroque music through the use of polyrhythms, phasing and musical collage — blending excerpts from that repertoire with modern improvisation and harmonic creativity. Going beyond a traditional tribute, and even further from a simple jazz reinterpretation, these are true recompositions that renew Bach’s musical material through techniques inspired by the visual arts. The album was commissioned by the Around Classic festival and features the newly formed Quodlibet Quintet, comprising five of the most prominent figures in Portuguese jazz: Daniel Bernardes (piano, composition), Ricardo Toscano (alto saxophone, clarinet), João Barradas (accordion), Demian Cabaud (double bass) and Joel Silva (drums). An innovative contribution from the Artway label to the ongoing dialogue between classical and jazz traditions — a field in which Daniel Bernardes has consistently excelled throughout his career.
