Quarteto Sfera
Centred on the String Quartet by Luís de Freitas Branco — a key figure in Portuguese musical modernism, whose recently commemorated anniversary underscores his relevance today — this programme evokes the spirit of Southern Europe at the dawn of the 20th century. In a period of profound political upheaval and idealistic transformation, music emerges as a space of resistance and continuity. In this context, and in resonance with the theme “Resurrection”, the works evoke ideas of permanence, renewal and reinvention. In dialogue with the Portuguese composer, we find Giacomo Puccini, in the elegiac lyricism of Crisantemi; Joaquín Turina, in the expressive interiority of La oración del torero; and Germaine Tailleferre, the only woman in the group Les Six, whose clear and innovative writing affirms a new musical sensibility. Amidst chronological affinities and resonances of language, a cohesive journey is constructed where memory, permanence and renewal intertwine, evoking transformation, continuity and reinvention through the music itself.
