In a year that marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Maurice Ravel, a key figure in the modernisation of European music, the Orquestra do Algarve offers a concert that reviews some of the French musical expression of his period.
Four authors are featured, where the oldest roots are the evocative minimalism of Erik Satie, with his Gymnopédies, from the 1880s, later orchestrated by Claude Debussy, in a gesture of friendship towards Satie, the eternal enfant terrible permanently in financial straits.
From the previous generation, and a fundamental figure for Satie, Debussy and Ravel, we will hear the score of Masques et Bergamasques, a theatre composition by Gabriel Fauré, written at the end of his career in 1919.
The leading figure, however, is Maurice Ravel, whose always jovial and charming score of Ma Mère l'Oye will be heard, the suite of five children's pieces that the composer wrote in 1910 for two pianos and later orchestrated, as was his common practice.
This music, which culminates in the ecstatic beauty of the ‘fairy garden’, is a synthesis of the techniques and inspirations not only of Ravel, but of his entire generation: orientalism, 17th century French tales, archaic court dances, in a representation of a modernity that revisits the past.
And revisiting the past is precisely what António Fragoso, the Portuguese composer who died in 1918 at the age of just 21, a victim of the H1N1 virus, or Spanish flu, does.
