Capela Marta
75 Years of Harmony: A Journey of Faith and Identity
RESERVATIONS STARTING JUNE 17
To mark its 75th anniversary, the Coro Capela Marta presents a programme that is both a historical retrospective and a celebration of light. Founded in 1951 by António José Gomes Júnior (Marta) and under the patronage of St Joseph, the choir’s performance traces the seven and a half decades of continuous dedication to choral music that have shaped its identity.
The musical programme offers a journey through the legacy of its conductors and artistic directors. The profound spirituality of António Marta paves the way with works such as Cantate Domino and Ave Maria, which establish a dialogue with the sacred. This journey through sacred music — the central axis of the choir’s history — is enriched by the compositions of Alberto António Gomes and by the devout devotion present in the works of Francisco Cunha, whose theme ‘Christ calls’ resonates with the hope of the Easter season.
Under the current direction of conductor Tiago André Pereira, the programme culminates in a heartfelt tribute to our Póvoa de Varzim, home to iconic figures such as Cego do Maio and Eça de Queirós. The performance of Ladaínha das Lanchas, with lyrics by António Nobre, evokes the spirit of Póvoa and the resilience of a people who, much like the theme of the Resurrection, find their vital strength in overcoming adversity and in faith.
This concert is, therefore, a testament to the ‘living memory’ of Capela Marta: a tribute to the music that unites the past and the present, honouring those who came before us and celebrating the life that is renewed in every note.
