Rosa sine spinis invites the audience to enter the soundscape of Marian devotion during the Golden Age of Portuguese polyphony. Centred on Duarte Lobo’s magnificent Missa Sancta Maria, based on Francisco Guerrero’s famous motet of the same name, the programme brings together some of the most inspired works dedicated to the Virgin Mary by Portuguese composers of the 16th and 17th centuries. From the works of Duarte Lobo, Manuel Cardoso, Estêvão de Brito, Estêvão Lopes Morago and Pedro de Cristo emerges music of extraordinary beauty, in which contrapuntal sophistication is combined with profound spiritual intensity. During a period marked by profound religious, cultural and political upheavals, culminating in the Restoration of Portuguese independence in 1640, these composers found in the figure of Mary an inexhaustible source of contemplation, hope and transcendence. Rosa sine spinis thus reveals the richness of a musical tradition that represents one of the most brilliant moments in the history of Portuguese music.
