Requiem for the Living

Requiem for the Living is a choral-symphonic work by the American composer Dan Forrest, written in 2013, which offers a deeply human and contemporary take on the traditional Requiem genre. Unlike classical requiem masses, which focus on the eternal rest of the dead, this work is symbolically addressed to the living, exploring themes such as grief, pain, hope, redemption and inner peace.
The score combines liturgical texts in Latin with excerpts in English taken from the Book of Job, Ecclesiastes and the Psalms, creating an emotional journey that ranges from initial unease to final serenity. Musically, Dan Forrest employs an accessible, expressive and cinematic language, with great harmonic richness, enveloping choral lines and an orchestral part of strong dramatic impact.
The project presents itself as an intense spiritual and artistic experience, capable of establishing a direct connection with the contemporary audience, regardless of their religious background, valuing music as a space for reflection, consolation and transcendence, based on the collaboration between the Orfeão de Leiria Choir, as an amateur choir, the singing students of the Orfeão de Leiria Music School and the institution’s instrumental teachers, promoting an artistic model of sharing, inclusion and collective growth.
