Estela Alexandre Orquestra
Cantomilo
Estela Alexandre discovered the world of composition during her degree in jazz piano, when she began composing original pieces and arrangements for orchestra (conventional jazz formation). This led to an ambitious project to create an orchestra, bringing together musicians of different generations from across the country, with whom she would finish recording her first album in September 2024, scheduled for release in spring 2025. This work is a documentary, combining the recording made with the orchestra in 2024 with other recordings made since 2020.
Each member of the Estela Alexandre Orchestra was chosen not only for their technical excellence, but also for their personality, with the aim of elevating musical creation and emphasising the connection between musicians, understood as fundamental to generating an authentic and emotionally powerful result.
The listener is offered a cinematic sound experience, designed to create a relationship with the audience, inviting them on an emotional and immersive journey through music, as if it were a soundtrack. The artist's music also reflects her different influences, celebrating Portuguese music and drawing inspiration from other soundtracks. Nature also serves as a muse for this music, giving rise to the name of the album.
During the 2020 lockdown in her hometown of Cortes - Leiria, she came across a new appreciation and perception of nature as a mechanism of inspiration for creation. This context of introspection and observation deeply influenced the album, which would eventually be titled Cantomilo, in homage to the place where creative expression flourished. This rediscovery of herself and the immensity of nature, in contrast to her new and unsettling personal, academic and professional experiences in the capital, means that several tracks on the album musically portray some of the places, heritage and landscapes hidden away in the district of Leiria, revealing their beauty and splendour and invoking their peacefulness.
