Orquestra XXI is an innovative cultural initiative that brings together Portuguese musicians living abroad. Conducted since its inception by Dinis Sousa, Orquestra XXI is now recognised as one of Portugal’s most inspiring cultural communities, with performances that have been acclaimed by audiences across the country and by music critics alike.
In July, Orquestra XXI returns to Cistermúsica for a concert dedicated to Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony N.º 9. Composed during a period when the composer had emigrated to New York, the famous ‘New World’ Symphony combines elements of the African-American musical tradition with classically inspired composition, and is considered one of the most popular pieces in the symphonic repertoire. Also on the programme, Orquestra XXI will accompany Marie-Ange Nguci, one of today’s most outstanding young soloists, in Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto.
