Dancing Fountains: Recuerdos de Alcobaça

Dancing Fountains: Memories of Alcobaça is a choreographic work that stems from the artistic research project Dancing Fountains, developed as part of the Master’s degree in Choreographic Creation and Professional Practices: Specialisation in Artistic Mediation in Dance.
The project originated from childhood memories associated with the public fountains of Alcobaça, inspired by stories passed down through generations about daily journeys to fetch water, community gatherings and the bonds forged around these spaces. Building on this premise, a process was developed to collect testimonies from residents of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Alcobaça, seeking to preserve experiences, stories and knowledge that form part of the community’s collective memory.
The narratives collected were subsequently transformed into choreographic material through processes of improvisation, composition and artistic mediation, giving rise to a work that bridges individual memory and intangible heritage. On stage, six performers bring to life fragments of lives marked by work, family, social change and the passage of time.
Presented by the fountain on the north side of Alcobaça Monastery, the show establishes a dialogue between public space, local history and contemporary creation. Alongside the performance, the audience is invited to access the project’s digital platforms via a QR code, where they can explore materials from the artistic process, share memories and contribute to the ongoing development of this collective archive.
More than just a dance performance, Dancing Fountains: Memories of Alcobaça invites reflection on the importance of listening to, preserving and celebrating the stories that shape a community’s identity.
