In this concert, the Orbis Quintet explores some of the most emblematic works for string quintet in the classical repertoire, by composers who have marked the history of music. The programme features three fundamental pieces, each of them significant both in the evolution of chamber music and in the way they reflect the creative spirit and innovations of their composers.
What sets the Orbis Quintet apart is our different than usual line-up of two violins, two violas and a cello. Although this configuration is less conventional compared to the traditional string quintet (two violins, viola, cello and double bass), it offers a richer and more complex sound. The combination of the two violas, in particular, creates a more robust texture, allowing for a greater diversity of dynamics and a more intimate interaction between the musicians. This formation provides greater flexibility in the approach to the works, allowing a wider range of sonorities to be explored, from the most delicate and introspective moments to the most intense and expansive.
With this configuration, we have the possibility of emphasising different voices and creating a denser harmony, which allows us to give a new reading to classical works without losing the essence of the music. The pieces we have chosen have been selected to take advantage of this unique sonority. We want to provide the audience with a captivating experience, while at the same time exploiting the flexibility and expressiveness of our line-up.
The choice of this programme for Cistermúsica arises from our desire to present a set of works that represent different eras and styles within the universe of chamber music. The festival, with its strong links to musical tradition and cultural heritage, provides the ideal context for publicising the richness of these works and reflecting on their evolution over time. For the Orbis Quintet, this concert is a unique opportunity to explore the emotional and technical depth of these compositions, while sharing with the audience our own personal interpretation of some of the most beautiful pieces for string quintet ever composed.
