Lux Æterna
FREE ENTRANCE
Lux aeterna. The eternal light that symbolises life after death. The light that reveals peace and eternal glory. The light that crosses the eternity of time, in a journey of religious sounds that goes from the Middle Ages to the present day, although not chronologically, and in which we are guided by a group of female voices. Nothing more. Because nothing more is needed. From Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), a German Benedictine abbess, to Claudio Carneyro (1895-1963) from Porto, not forgetting the British Gustav Holst (1864-1943) and John Tavener (1944-2013); this programme converges in the eternal interpellation and dedication of the Virgin Mary, even though it differs in the ways and languages that are addressed to her. Lux aeterna also includes works by active composers such as Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978) and Sarah Quartel (b. 1982), as well as Portuguese composers Carlos Garcia (b. 1983) and Rui Paulo Teixeira (b. 1973), demonstrating that a cappella vocal writing continues to offer new and expressive possibilities.
