The dawn of Impressionism amidst the waning Romantic era

The Duo Scherzo performs in its original line-up to present a work by a female composer – Mel Bonis – offering the audience a feminine musical perspective, a territory that has been less explored by performers throughout the history of music.
They then invite cellist Maxim Doujak to perform two beautiful, romantic works in which the traditional piano and string trio is reimagined.
Although the traditional piano, violin and cello trio has been the formation that has received the most attention from composers throughout the history of music, the version featuring the flute has carved out its own space and developed a repertoire of its own, as we shall hear in this concert.
Replacing the violin with the flute in the traditional piano, violin and cello trio produces an unexpected sound, yet one of great timbral success.
The lightness of the flute, combined with the sonic depth of the cello and the harmonic richness of the piano, creates a highly original sound that is a great pleasure to the ear.
The warm reception from the audience at the trio’s performances demonstrates the pleasant surprise of encountering an unexpected ensemble, which captivates listeners and carves out a new space within the Portuguese music scene.
