With this programme, Ars Lusitana aims to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Francisco Garro's death. Born in Alfaro (Spain) c.1556, he worked in his home country (Logroño, Valladolid, Sigüenza) until 1592, when he became master of the Royal Chapel of Portugal, in the service of King Philip I, a post he held until his death in 1623. The mass that gives the programme its name can be found in a choir book published in Lisbon in 1609, now in the National Library. Completing this programme are the cantata in canton for a mass of Beata Maria Virgine, as well as two motets by Vicente Lusitano (c.1520-c.1561), taken from his Liber primus epigramatum (Rome, 1551).
